Busboys & Poets?

busboyslogoAn interesting combination right? Yea, that’s what I thought until I Googled them. It’s actually a restaraunt in downtown DC. Another hotspot for poets and fans–especially in April. April is National Poetry Month and Busboys & Poets hosts an open mic atleast once a week, if not, more.

The food looks really good too. Don’t know of too many hole-in-the-wall spots known for their poetry and their food. I’ve heard that it gets pretty crowded on open mic night. As I sat in the Black Student Union office a few weeks ago and mentioned Busboys & Poets, one young lady shared her experience.

“It was packed but they said that everybody had to sit down so they made me sit on my boyfriends lap to free a seat.”

On one hand, I’m ok with that. That means that something great is happening there and I want to go to find out. On the other hand, it might affect the experience. I don’t think anyone wants to have to crain their neck or continue to shift on top of someone else’s lap for hours. Yes, the poetry is great, but the question is: is it worth my comfort?

All in all, it looks like a great spot. A review is in order after my visit.

  1. I went to BB&P once. Unfortunately, it was sooooo packed that we couldn’t get in. I think because I really dig the scene, I would be ok with being packed in to the room by any means necessary. That means it’s gotta be worth it. But I can see what the young lady was saying…

Factoid: The name “Busboys & Poets” refers to Langston Hughes… CHYEA!

  3. Hope you have a great first-time visit at Busboys! We have Open Mic three times a week (different location per night) and are working on a Deaf Poetry monthly series!

Food Recommendations (my faves!): Hummus and Toasted Pita (whole wheat!) for appetizer, Portobello Panini for lunch, Blackened Salmon for dinner, and Bread Pudding for dessert!

I look forward to reading your post-review =)
